Voice, Resonance, and Swallowing Center

UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh's Voice, Resonance, and Swallowing Center — the nation's oldest and first such center — offers complete care for childhood voice, resonance, and swallowing disorders.

We provide thorough assessments, preventive care, and intervention for young vocal professionals.

The center combines state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques and advanced therapies with the expertise of a multidisciplinary team of:

  • Pediatric otolaryngologists
  • Nurses
  • Speech and language pathologists

In addition to a full medical exam, we also offer specialized tests such as:

  • Measures of vocal, aerodynamic, and acoustic parameters as they relate to voice.
  • Cookie swallows to further evaluate swallowing function.
  • Dynamic X-ray studies to help assess severe resonance problems.
  • Full endoscopic evaluations.

Cutting-edge Voice Disorder Research

We deliver this world-class care from a center that trains tomorrow's experts and conducts cutting-edge research.

The National Institutes of Health largely funds much of our basic and clinical voice, resonance, and swallowing disorder research.

We carefully track patient outcomes through the nation's oldest computerized registry with the unwavering goal of making yesterday's dreams today's standard-of-care realities.

Referral Requirements for the Voice, Resonance, and Swallowing Center

The Voice, Resonance, and Swallowing Center provides complete care to your child, but also to referring physicians and surgeons who may request diagnoses, second opinions, treatment plans and definitive treatment.

We require referrals from primary care physicians or other Children’s Hospital specialty services. We also may require authorization from the insurance provider and primary care physician if your child is enrolled in managed care insurance plans.
