Diagnosing Movement Disorders

Families are encouraged to videotape their child in everyday activities, showing the movements that are of concern, and bring these recordings to their child's appointment. These videos often are helpful in the evaluation and diagnosis of movement disorders.

Each patient of the Movement Disorders Clinic will undergo a thorough evaluation with special attention to medical and family history, educational and behavioral issues, and a comprehensive neurological examination. Also aiding the diagnosis are our movement disorder specialist and advanced neuroimaging technologies, including:

  • CT or CAT scan (computed tomography scans)
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners
  • Electromyogram (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) scan
  • Cerebral spinal fluid analysis (spinal tap or lumbar puncture)
  • Evoked potentials
  • Myelogram
  • Ultrasound (sonogram)
  • Neurosonogram
  • Magnetoencephalogram (MEG)
  • MR spectroscopy
  • Diffusion tensor imaging
  • PET molecular imaging
