Biomarkers for Urinary Tract Infection and Pyelonephritis

Protocol Description

The purpose of this study is to determine if a urinary tract infection (UTI) is in the bladder or the kidneys by looking at biomarkers in the urine. This information will help doctors reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics and imaging tests. This is an observational study and the participant’s UTI will be treated by their own doctor per standard of care.

Eligibility Criteria

Subject to certain exclusion criteria; this study is open to children of both genders who have been diagnosed with their first UTI. Participants must be at least 1 month of age to 3 years old.

Requirements

There is one visit for participation in this study. At this visit, participants will have a DMSA kidney scan to see if there is an infection in the kidneys. Researchers will share the results of the DMSA scan with the child’s doctor.
