The MRSA Decolonization Study will assess the effectiveness of treatment provided in Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC's MRSA clinic. The study will assess the colonization of MRSA through obtaining nose, throat, and rectum cultures at one, three, and six months following the initial visit.
The study will include boys and girls ages 6 months to 17 years. To be eligible, children must have had a minimum of two skin or soft tissue infections within the last six months with at least one documented culture report that shows MRSA. Boys: 6 months to 17 years Girls: 6 months to 17 years
Study participants must complete four one-hour visits at the clinic. In the study, children will be give the standard combination of antibiotics, topical mupirocin, chlorhexidine washes, and diluted bleach baths recommended for all patients being seen for MRSA infection. Visits: 4 Duration: one hour
