Through this study, researchers will analyze fluid collected from the middle ear of children having tubes inserted as part of a medical treatment. Researchers will consider thickness of the fluid and other attributes that may prevent the Eustachian tubes from opening properly. The Eustachian tubes keep air pressure in the middle ear the same as air pressure outside, and when the Eustachian tubes do not open normally, fluid buildup, infections, and other problems can occur in the middle ear.
Subject to exclusion criteria, the study is accepting individuals of both genders, ages 6 months to 25 years, who are being scheduled to have tympanostomy tubes inserted in their ears because of fluid buildup or ear infections. Males and Females: Ages 6 months to 25 years
Fluid suctioned from the ear as part of the tube insertion procedure will be collected and sent for lab analysis rather than being discarded. Visits: None beyond standard care Duration: Not applicable
